Begun by the South Main Preservation Society and now sponsored by the City of St. Charles, Lewis & Clark Heritage Days has been an annual event since 1979. It commemorates the time the Corps of Discovery spent in St. Charles in May of 1804, making final preparations for their journey.
Come to Frontier Park, next to the Missouri River, to visit the camp of the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, the group that reenacted the entire Lewis & Clark Expedition during the recently concluded Bicentennial. Their full-scale replica boats, which traveled the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers will be on display.
A time-line camp has other military units representing the time period from the French and Indian War up to the War of 1812. Craftspeople demonstrate some of the skills needed for survival and comfort 200 years ago. Food vendors offer fare from the time period. Children of all ages will have a chance to play some of the games their ancestors enjoyed.
The largest fife and drum muster west of the Mississippi provides stirring military music. Other musicians perform popular tunes of the time. A storyteller gives a gripping tale of life in an earlier time.
Come to St. Charles on May 15-16, 2010 to experience all these things and much more. For more information, email mamccoyusa@yahoo.com
